There has been a growing need for building a next generation urban infrastructure to address resource/energy issues and disasters since the Great East Japan Earthquake. In addition, as symbolized by the term "infrastructure export," transfer of advanced technologies to developing countries in the field of environmental engineering in Japan is also attracting attention recently. The environmental engineering division is conducting studies, mainly focusing on technological fields including technology to improve sound/vibration, resource recycling and waste management system, air/water environmental protection technology and environmentally-sound energy technology, with Advanced Sustainable Cities as a key word. We are going to hold an international workshop for the purpose of sharing information about advanced studies, technical development and building a social system, etc. in these fields. The workshop will aim at fostering a shared awareness towards realization of the Advanced Sustainable Cities. We look forward to participation of many people engaged in environmental engineering.
